Strong local roots

Boluda Towage’s rich history in Germany dates back to the 19th century, and it’s important for us to build on deep community roots and honour local traditions.

In 2017, Boluda Towage Division acquired the German towage companies URAG and L&R. URAG is a historic European company with 126 years of history, founded to meet freight traffic demand on the Weser River as it passed through the city of Bremen, in the late nineteenth century. URAG's subsidiary L&R (Lutgens & Reimers) was established in 1837 and operated on the river Elbe and in the port of Hamburg.

Two years later, in 2019, Boluda Towage Division acquired the Northwest European towage provider KotugSmit Towage. This company's roots in Germany go back to the ’90s.

Since the acquisition in 2019, the three German towage companies have been merged into one company Boluda Deutschland GmbH. As part of this integration, the team moved together to a joined home base in Bremen.

Track record in Germany

Today, Boluda Towage is known as a global maritime service provider, having brought together a wonderful history with decades of seamanship and experience, with the ambition to further grow. In a rapidly changing world, we need a flexible and adaptable approach, to remain responsive to our customers' needs.

Our focus is and remains to provide the safest, most efficient, and sustainable port towage services. And to be a reliable partner for all our business partners.

Some recent examples of new activities in the German ports:

  • In September 2021, Boluda Towage commenced towage activities in the port of Rostock. Another milestone towards strengthening and expansion of our activities in North West Europe and the Baltic Sea region.
  • Since February 2022, Boluda Towage’s BREMEN FIGHTER has been sporting the official German Coast Guard colours. The most powerful tug in our fleet operates under the command of the German Federal Waterways Authorities in the Baltic Sea.
  • Following the acquisition of Iskes Towage in February 2022, the towage activities in the Port of Lübeck have been incorporated into the German organization.
  • November 2022: one of the recent projects we are very proud of, is the start of towage activities in the Port of Lubmin, for the first installation of a floating LNG storage plant. In April 2024, The Energie-Terminal "Deutsche Ostsee" in the industrial port of Mukran (Island of Rügen) received its operating permits. Since then, the FRSU plant is relocated from Lubmin to Mukran.
