In May 2024, Boluda Towage has acquired SMS Towage. The acquisition involves taking over the harbour & offshore towage services and marine operations, together with the management, office staff, crew, and fleet, based in the United Kingdom. Operating in the UK since 1992, first as a ship management company and since 2002 as a towage operator, SMS Towage has emerged as a major player in the UK towage market. Currently, the company is operating in the UK ports/regions of, Tyne, Tees, Humber, Portsmouth, South Wales.
The addition of SMS will strengthen the position of Boluda Towage, already operating in the ports of Invergordon (Cromarty Firth), London, Liverpool, and Southampton, as a global leader in towage and sustainable maritime services, with a broader scope in the UK. The geographical footprint of both Boluda Towage UK and SMS Towage is complementary.
Nowadays, Boluda Towage provides towage services with an extensive fleet of around 34 tugs - all operating under the British flag - in the ports of Invergordon, Liverpool, London / River Thames . Southampton, Larne Docks , Belfast Docks, Blyth, Tyne, Hartlepool, Sunderland, Tees, Goole Docks, Hull Docks, Immingham Docks, Great Yarmouth, Grimsby Docks, Portsmouth, Portbury, Avonmouth, Newport Docks, Cardiff Docks, Barry Docks.

Boluda Towage’s rich history in the UK dates back to the 19th century, and it’s important for us to build on deep community roots and honour local traditions.
In 2019, Boluda Towage Division acquired KST (KotugSmit Towage). The company had a leading presence in 12 ports in 4 European countries (the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany), which has led to increased growth and smarter towing operations with a modern and efficient fleet of around 70 tugs.
The company's roots in the UK go back to the 19th century thanks to the heritage of its legal predecessors Alexandra Towing (Liverpool) and Caledonian Towage / JP Knight Group (Scotland).

We operate globally, but local anchoring is and remains of great importance to us. Our commercial team serves both the international and local port networks, and in all the ports where we offer our services, we work with local crews and teams who know the ports like the back of their hand.
Some recent examples of milestones in the UK:
- May 2024: Acquisition SMS Towage. The broader presence in the UK is a further step towards strengthening Boluda Towage’s global network and connecting its activities in the UK. With its high-quality services, diverse fleet of tugs, and adaptable approach, Boluda Towage responds flexibly to its customers’ needs and the requirements of its business partners.
- December 2023: Zhen Hua convoy to DP World London. In February 2024, DP World London Gateway welcomed Heavy Lift vessel ZHEN HUA 26, loaded with four new Gantry container cranes. Boluda Towage safely assisted the special transport on the River Thames and moored the vessel alongside London Gateway.
- October 2023: Arrival Lucia B in Liverpool. The first call of Boluda Lines’ container ship, the 803 TEU-class ‘LUCIA B’ to the Port of Liverpool, United Kingdom in October 2023. Boluda Towage's tugs VB PHOENIX and VB ELBE welcomed ‘LUCIA B’ and assisted the vessel to its berthing place at Liverpool’s Royal Seaforth Container Terminal.
- December 2021: Acquisition Caledonian Towage. The incorporation of Caledonian’s towage and marine operations will strengthen Boluda Towage’s position as a global leader in towage and sustainable maritime services, with additional presence in Scotland. Operating in the Cromarty Firth since 1969, Caledonian Towage has emerged as a major player in the towage and marine transportation business. The operation plays an integral part in the success of Cromarty Firth's reputation as a Premier Deep Water Port and the solid fleet is heavily engaged in a wide variety of towage and support activities.
